Kaya Firth – In Memoriam
I was fortunate to have coached Kaya in Twisters House League Hockey for four seasons, from 2006-07 Peewee through 2009-10 Bantam-Midget.
Kaya was a wonderful, positive influence in the dressing-room, on the bench, and on the ice. With her infectious smile and spirited demeanour, she brought fun and laughter to the whole team. |

She was good at either Forward or Centre, and potted us quite a few nice goals, but her chief contribution to any team she was on seemed to be her positive attitude regardless of the game’s outcome. She worked up a rosy glow on her cheeks and a healthy sweat, and knew that she had given her best effort with every shift and every game she played. Reliable and trustworthy, she would attend practices and games working hard each time, or alert me if she could not. Never one to complain or retaliate, I’m pretty sure she didn’t see the inside of the penalty box, just kept her cool and focused on the game. She was one of those players that every coach wishes they could have a whole team of!
We have lost a great team-player in Kaya, but her team-mates and coaches, friends, family and teachers will all remember her as an out-going, adventurous, fun-to-be-with lover of the great game of life.
