Introducing the NHGHA Empowered to Lead Program
WHAT IS EMPOWERED TO LEAD?
Empowered to Lead is a new and exciting opportunity within the North Halton Girls Hockey Association (NHGHA). This unique program is designed to support females, over the age of 16, who are interested in beginning their coaching journey and building valuable leadership skills. This program will empower future female coaches by matching them with a coaching mentor to develop the confidence and skills essential for coaching young athletes.
WHY EMPOWERED TO LEAD?
Mentorship is proven to be a superior strategy in the recruitment, retention, development, and advancement of women in leadership roles in sport (Kerr & Marshall, 2007) by fostering confidence, motivation, and increased learning. As participants of the NHGHA Empowered to Lead Program, you will learn essential coaching skills, through the process of creating your own coaching philosophy based on your values, principles, and beliefs. Developing a coaching philosophy helps individuals create a vision and set your own goals to complete this vision. This initiative offers invaluable experiences, laying the foundation for future endeavors both on and off the ice.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED?
It’s easy! Submit your application and tell us about any previous experience, your goals, and future coaching aspirations. The Leadership Pathway Committee will interview applicants, to ensure a diverse and committed group of participants. Selected players will be rostered on a Twister team and assigned a coaching mentor.
FLEXIBLE ENGAGEMENT:
Approved participants will meet with their mentor to determine a manageable, part-time flexible schedule. We understand that players' primary team, work commitments, and education will take priority.
COACHING JOURNEY
Each coaching journey will be unique to your own strengths and comfort level. The goal is to provide you with a gradual learning progression. These skills will give you confidence to:
· Organize team building activities
· Communicate effectively with players and staff
· Foster team confidence
· Facilitate warm-up drills
· Create practice plans/drills
· Build and run full team practices
· Lead team discussions
